사실 벤야민의 대도시에 대한 깊은 관심은 자신이 유년 시절을 보냈던 베를린의 경험이 중요한 요소이지만, 대학 시절에 수업을 들었던 같은 베를린 출신의 사회학자 게오르그 짐멜의 영향을 무시할 수 없다.

이 도시의 이미지는 그에게 베일로 덮여있기 때문이다.
그의 의붓아버지 역시 혁명에서 잡혔으나 교수형에서 살아남았다.

우울의 고백
